About the Durban and Coast SPCA

Mission Statement: The Durban & Coast SPCA's mission is to improve the welfare of, and to prevent cruelty to all animals in the Greater Durban Area. We provide the underprivileged communities with veterinary services for their animals.

History : The Durban & Coast SPCA was founded in 1897 and opened its first animal shelter in Sydney Road in 1929, at rather inadequate premises. This was the beginning of a long, hard fight for animals; and the battle to abolish cruelty still rages today. Despite facing insurmountable odds through many difficult years, our fledgling society went from strength to strength and became a dynamic, recognised body, considered the foremost authority on animal welfare. In 1967 a 90-year lease was negotiated with the Durban City Council and our organisation moved to its current premises situated on 2 hectares of property in Cato Manor.
