History : The Durban & Coast SPCA was founded in 1897 and opened its first animal shelter in Sydney Road in 1929, at rather inadequate premises. This was the beginning of a long, hard fight for animals; and the battle to abolish cruelty still rages today. Despite facing insurmountable odds through many difficult years, our fledgling society went from strength to strength and became a dynamic, recognised body, considered the foremost authority on animal welfare. In 1967 a 90-year lease was negotiated with the Durban City Council and our organisation moved to its current premises situated on 2 hectares of property in Cato Manor. |
