TLC for Cats

Although incredibly self-reliant, like any pet the cat requires proper care and lots of attention. A cat's life can span 15 years and you need to make a committed decision about this new responsibility. The cat is an ideal pet for town-dwellers as they can live indoors and do not need to be taken for daily walks. It is very important to have your cat sterilised in order to reduce the overwhelming numbers of stray, abused and neglected pets. The female cat is more docile and playful, while the male is more assertive and territorial. However, if your male is neutered there will be few behavioural differences between him and the female. As soon as you acquire your new pet it is necessary to register it with your vet. There are two potentially fatal viruses that you will need to have your cat vaccinated against: Feline Enteritis and Feline Influenza (cat flu and snuffles). These vaccinations should be administered at around 6 weeks old. If you are acquiring an adult cat, be sure to receive the up-to-date certificate proving that it was vaccinated as a kitten and has since received regular boosters. Be prepared for your new companion's arrival at home; there is some essential cat-care equipment that you should have ready:

  • water & food bowl
  • litter tray, litter and shovel
  • grooming brush
  • cat carrier for safe transportation
  • comfortable bedding
  • a selection of toys
  • scratching post

It is important to establish a routine that will make life easier for yourself and more enjoyable for your pet. Feeding, bedtime, and grooming should be done at the same time and in the same area every day. It is a good idea to fit a cat flap to allow your cat the freedom to come and go as it pleases. Make sure to fit the flap at the right height for the cat to step through! Bear in mind that if your cat is exploring, it is essential that it have a collar and tag for identification purposes.
