Inspectorate : The SPCA receives hundreds of reports of cruelty and neglect monthly. Inspectorate's duties include animal rescues, checks on pet shops, circuses, security firms, livestock transportation, abattoirs, hatcheries and private homes. Not only dogs and cats are dealt with; any case is investigated – be it domestic, farm or wild, used for security, research and/or financial gain. Our inspectors are on call 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, confronting the horrors of animal cruelty. All reports are investigated thoroughly.

Chaining story with a less happy ending
A dog was found chained to a tree on a very short chain in
Clairwood. It was, moreover, perched on top of a canopy. It had
no water and drank copiously when Jacqui provided some.
“I’ll help you to free the dog,” she told the owner, “but I’m
going to charge you.”
Jacqui was badly scratched while freeing the animal, because
it was in such an anxious state.

Animal cops S.A.
Those who imagine that SPCA inspectors just sit around waiting
for a callout will find much to change their minds in Animal
Cops SA, the new television programme which follows the work
of the inspectors of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. The team of
12 inspectors investigates up to 1300 calls every month.
Watch the action-packed episodes on Animal Planet on
Mondays at 22:00, which is rather a late hour for some, but this
is a programme well worth watching, or else recording for those
who have the means. |

We repeat the warning!
Never leave a child or any animal in a car unattended,
even if the windows are left slightly open. The heat in a
closed vehicle rises tremendously, even on a relatively
mild sunny day. Anyone guilty of perpetrating this
thoughtless action could cause death or severe brain
damage, dehydration or other severe injury. |

Trapped cat
A cat that had fallen between garden walls in its own garden
remained trapped for two days while mewing pitifully. Roshen
went to rescue it and found that its paw had become stuck.
The poor little creature had been trying to chew its own paw
off to release itself. Roshen tried to smash down the wall with
a crowbar. It was clear that the wound had already become
septic. Unable to free the suffering little animal, Roshen had to
enthanase it on the spot. |

This time the mouse wins!
We all know that the feeding of live prey to reptiles is a cruel
habit, and against the law, even though these animals feed
on live prey in the wild. The difference is that the prey is
pounced on and killed, whereas live prey in a reptile
cage might suffer days of quivering fear before being
attacked. There is a huge difference between these
two situations.
However, a plucky mouse in
Nantoun, Taiwan, turned the
tables on a deadly viper after
being served up as a meal
and bit the snake to death. |
