Report : Berea

Two Persian cats were, within a week of each other, rescued on the Berea. One was in Windmill Road where it had become thoroughly wedged under a newly-made patio. One could see it when the light of a torch was shone between the stones and woodwork. The occupants of the house were very worried and had tried to coax it out to no avail.

Then a small girl suggested that they jump up and down on the wooden platform and make a noise. The cat shot out, ran into the garage where the domestic worker was ironing, and hid in the washing basket, peering out with large green eyes. The maid got such a fright that she jumped into a cupboard! The cat was re-united with its owner two days later after it had been checked out at the SPCA. It had been missing for some time and was very thin, but otherwise unharmed.

The second Persian rescue was in Essenwood Road where a big fluffy cat had become wedged between two ten-metre-high walls. It was looking up pitifully with wide blue eyes, quite unable to help itself. It had cried all night. A pool net proved inadequate to help it out, so the Fire Department was called, and they were very obliging, as usual. Even their very long ladder could barely fit into the narrow space between the walls. The firemen were too big to get down into the very narrow space, so Jacqui had to be lowered down. She retrieved the cat, wedged it into the basket and fastened the container. First the cat was hauled up, and then Jacqui!
