Susanne Niehaus was devastated at the death of her cat, Homer, who was savagely shot in the face on 28 April. She and her fiancé rushed the seriously injured cat to the Ashburne Emergency Vet in Glenashley. They assumed that he had been bitten in the face by a very large dog, but when X-rays were taken, it was found that a bullet from a .22 rifle had gone through his mouth and lodged in his neck.
Despite the best attempts of the veterinary clinic, Homer died five days after being shot. Susanne reported the shooting to the SPCA and to the Greenwood Park police. SPCA Inspector Roshen Rupee is handling the case.
Susanne is appealing to anyone who has any knowledge of the shooting to come forward. “Next time, it could be your loving pet, or even a child,” she says.
A concerned and exceedingly generous person, who wishes to remain anonymous, put up a reward of R10 000 for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator, and a further R3 000 has now been added to this. “This is so awesome,” says Susanne Niehaus. “I am so glad to know that there are still people out there who care.”
The bullet could eventually lead to the identification of the perpetrator..... more reports »
