From The Inspectorate

Report : THE CASE OF THE CAGED DOGS

We reported earlier that several dogs had been found in broken-down cages off Warwick Avenue. Although they were physically not in bad condition, they were seriously traumatised. The owner was attempting to contract them out as guard dogs.

Two older dogs were sterilised and returned to the owner on condition that they would live on his Isipingo property in total freedom. It was considered that they were too old to be easily re-homed and would be better off with the owner, provided that they lived normal lives on his Isipingo property.

The other dogs were re-homed. One new owner took two dogs, both German Shepherds, an older and a younger dog. The younger dog was clearly traumatised, but she was determined to give it a chance. After a mouth of trying to cope, and even with the help of counselling, she was tearfully obliged to admit defeat. The traumatised young dog was totally out of control and hyperactive beyond help.
Even the professional trainer was unable to handle him.

After the story of the dogs had appeared in the press last year, we received a letter from Mr J A C Reinecke about them. He was anxious about their fate and wanted to know whether they had found new homes. He praised the SPCA for its intervention and enclosed a generous cheque. He will be pleased to know that, apart from the sad case of the young German Shepherd that was psychologically unable to cope, the other dogs found caring new owners, and the welfare of the two older dogs that were retained by the original owner will continue to be monitored .... more reports »
