Even the best-run animal facilities are routinely checked by the SPCA. Jacqui was at uShaka recently and walked around with Dr Mark Penning, who is a doctor of veterinary science and was formerly at the Umgeni Bird Park.
One of the trainees noticed that 25-year-old dolphin, Gambit, had a weeping eye.
Gambit is very much at home with humans, and when the trainee whistled, Gambit launched himself from the depths of the pool onto a platform which has a shallow amount of water in it for easy landing and lifted his head up for the vet to examine him and apply the eyedrops. He then went back into the water and swam off.
Visits like this are one of the pleasanter parts of Jacqui’s job. Everything at uShaka is done to a very high standard.
