From The Inspectorate

Report : Packaged lizards in international transit!

There is no end to what people will get up to when it comes to animals. A man who gave his name on the air waybill as Mark Herbert had parcelled up three lizards and sent them via FedEx to Darren Herbert in Sydney, Australia. The FedEx people heard rustling coming from the package and opened it to find three lizards. Goodness knows what condition these little creatures would have been in by the time they reached Australia.

They might possibly have survived had their incarceration not extended much beyond the long flight itself, but the inevitable delays would probably have extended their journey, and it is very likely that they would have died. Certainly the flight would have been very uncomfortable as they would have been tossed about. It was not known that the package contained live animals until the rustling was heard.

Their value was given as R1000. The SPCA called in Esemvelo KZN Wildlife. FedEx knew nothing about the contents or the sender, but Esemvelo had heard about this man, and it seems he had done something similar before. The lizards are being happily housed at the Fitzsimmons Snake Park while the court procedures take their course..... more reports »
