From The Inspectorate

Report : Broken leg neglected

A neighbour phoned to tell us that an elderly black dog belonging to a neighbour came every day to lie on his verandah. He didn’t mind this at all and was fond of the dog. He had phoned six months earlier when another dog had ripped this dog’s ear. It was treated by the SPCA at the time.

Six months later he went overseas on holiday and when he returned found the dog lying on his verandah with a dangling broken leg. The dog was collected and brought to the SPCA, where it was found that the leg had been broken for at least a week without any attention being paid to it. It was in a very serious condition, and the dog was elderly. It had to be gently euthanased.

A docket has been opened against this callous owner. Jacqui phoned him to say this was the second time that he had neglected to give any treatment, and this second event had resulted in the death of his dog, for which he would be charged with cruelty to animals. He was unmoved and merely said “OK.” The dog had obviously gone every day to the neighbour for a little bit of affection, and we can only say ‘thank goodness’ for this person’s concern. .... more reports »
