The following was a brutally handled situation by people who should have known better and is likely to be viewed with concern by the public, and is certainly viewed with concern by the Inspectorate.
The owner of seven dogs had a boarder on his premises, and this man was unable to get into the property one night and so jumped over the wall.
He was bitten by one of the dogs who saw him an intruder, but it seems that – contrary to rumours – he was not subsequently “torn apart” by the dogs, as they did not savage him or continue biting him. It appears that he had just this one bite.
However, the boarder died – it seems of natural causes, not dogbite.
Three police vans arrived, along with paramedics, who removed the man’s body. The police phoned the commissioner and were, it seems, told to shoot the dogs.
The owner had arrived home and was told by the police to tie his dogs to trees, which he did.
To his horror, the police then shot his defenceless pets. One dog received five bullets.
The appropriate action would have been to call the SPCA, who are used to dealing with animals in crisis situations. Instead, all five pets were ruthlessly killed before any enquiry into the events had taken place. The owner begged for his two old dogs to be allowed to live, otherwise they would have been killed as well.
People are beginning to ask: how dangerous are the very people who are there to protect us?
This case is not going to go away. It will be handled through the proper channels… through the courts.
