From The Inspectorate

Report : An unusual transportation issue

A bull and cow were being transported on a trailer going to Umlazi along the N2 when the trailer tipped over. The bull escaped and ran off down the road, and the cow got as far as halfway down an embankment that led to a valley beyond. Jacqui and Roshen went out to deal with the situation, and it took some time for the bull to be sedated, and even more time for the owner to get another vehicle delivered. About three hours later, the animals were on their way to KwaMashu.

And another transportation issue!
Fourteen goats were being transported on the N2 to Lindelani in a bakkie, so were greatly overcrowded, and then a back wheel fell off. The SPCA was called. The goats had come from somewhere in the former Transvaal, specific area unknown, and were in reasonable condition. However, they couldn’t be unloaded on a busy freeway. The next step was to get a low-bed truck with a hoist, and the SAP assisted owing to the heavy flow of traffic.

The whole vehicle, along with the fourteen goats, had to be hoisted onto the truck. Before continuing on their journey, they were fed and watered. Although a written warning was given relating to the overcrowded transportation, the main desire of the inspectors was to see the goats safety on their way, and the low-bed truck was escorted to Lindelani. None of the goats suffered any injury. While in the rural-type township at Lindelani, Jacqui says she couldn’t help noticing a friendly, happy little terrier sitting on a heap of sand.

Nearby were several happy-faced little boys, all staring at Jacqui with great interest. She took a picture of them and had them all crowding round her so that they could see themselves in the photograph on her mobile. “Sometimes there is another side to our work,” Jacqui says, “a happier side… and this was one of them
.” She went off feeling that this had been a job well done. The animals were safe. None had been hurt. And the little interlude with the children had been a happy one. .... more reports »
