From The Inspectorate

Report : Jacqui Dewar is chosen one of South Africa’s “Heroes of 2007”

We always knew it, of course, but now so do a great many other people: Jacqui Dewar is a national hero… now officially chosen as one by The Independent on Saturday in their annual selection of remarkable South Africans.

In their 5 January 2008 issue, Jacqui – a mere four places below the “great hero of our time”, Nelson Mandela – is one of the ten “heroes” of the year, honoured for her tireless work in protecting “thousands of animals, especially during celebrations in which fireworks were used” (a topic on which quiet Jacqui is very passionate and outspoken), and for helping, through her example and her commitment, to find homes for animals desperately needing loving owners.

It is good to see Jacqui’s dedication, compassion and expertise publicly recognised in this way, especially since she is so humble about her achievements. This accolade caps the steady flow of congratulatory and appreciative letters received by the Durban and Coast SPCA for Jacqui and her fellow inspectors who do such sterling work out in the field.

Jacqui, small and slight in her SPCA uniform, is well-known to Durbanites and greatly admired. Her reputation is such that many people have given needy animals safe and loving homes simply because they know about Jacqui.
It is good to see her honoured in this way, especially as she is so reticent about her own abilities and just quietly gets on with doing her traumatic and demanding job.    Way to go, Jacqui!
