Twenty goat traders at Ezimbuzini in uMlazi are greatly pleased with the new facility that is being provided for them by the Corporation: a R3 million trading hub which allows each trader a 20m2 lock-up facility and a fenced trading area. There will be round-the-clock security, a cleaning contractor, parking bays and loading zones.
Area manager for South Durban, Samson Chiya, says that the facility is strategically placed next to a muthi market “to take advantage of cultural practices associated with goat-trading”.
The Council wants to improve the situation for previously marginalised businesses, and livestock trading is one of these. It is expected that the new facility will save the traders a considerable amount of money in after-hours transport costs, and they will at last be able to trade under hygienic conditions. Rental negotiations are under way.
Similar developments on Council-owned land will be considered as needs arise.
