Dougal rises to the challenge

Imagine putting on a furry dog suit on one of Durban’s notoriously warm mornings ... and then running five kilometres along a rough, single-track path and across a floating bridge without being able to see where you’re putting your feet!

Durban runner and triathlete, Dale Johnson, does this every year when he assumes the identity of our mascot, Dougal, to raise funds for the SPCA. He runs with a group of members who all belong to the “I wear red socks on Friday” movement. Members are dedicated to making a difference, being inspired and inspiring others, staying positive and remembering friends.

Because he travels so much, Dale doesn’t have any pets of his own, but he loves animals and is a big fan of the SPCA, which he says, “does a fantastic job, often in difficult circumstances”.

Along with thanking Dale for his wonderful efforts, we also thank everyone who sponsored him this year, collectively raising just under R21 000 towards the care of lost, abandoned and ill treated animals that find sanctuary at the SPCA. Thank you!
