Animal Week on the Dolphin Coast

During Animal Week, from 1-7 October, our Dolphin Coast SPCA collected pet food donations outside the SuperSpar and signed up MySchool supporters at the mall. Life & Style, the local radio station, interviewed our Marketing Manager, Tanya Fleischer, to find out how the community can get involved in our work, and the amazing job done by our Dog Box volunteers.

Meanwhile, down at the beach at Umhlanga, an animal rescue with a difference was taking place. Volunteer lifeguards spent nearly three hours in the water supporting a bottlenose dolphin, which was spotted in difficulty 25 metres from the beach. Under the suprvision of Kelly de Klerk from uShaka Marine World, lifeguards lifted the dolphin onto a rubberduck and took it back out to sea.

Once released, the dolphin appeared to take a few moments to recover from the boat ride, then swam away strongly towards a dolphin pod.

Stories about people who go to inordinate lengths to rescue animals in distress, are so uplifting! We salute all those who care for all living creatures – your actions go a long way towards restoring our faith in the human race.
