Recently we have dealt with an unprecedented number of heartbreaking cases of dogs and puppies being beaten – usually by their owners. Beaten with pangas ... brooms ... a baseball bat ... fists and feet. Strung up with chains and brutalised. In one horrific case, an animal was shot dead.
So far this year, we have seized 31 animals under warrant. These warrants are not easy to obtain – magistrates require ironclad proof before issuing them.
Sometimes proof is sent to us on video. I cannot tell you how sickening it is to watch human beings brutalising animals that are helpless, trusting and reliant on them. Yet, we do not see dogs turning on their abusers.
We are so grateful to those who care enough to reach out to the SPCA so we can take action. The cries of a puppy being beaten with a baseball bat recently attracted the attention of a neighbour. Now the rescued pup is snuggled up in a blanket in one of our kennels.
We do our best to bring those who abuse animals to justice, and deny them the privilege of ever owning an animal again.
Our inspectors have to watch disturbing video footage over and over again to meticulously record every detail on the docket presented to SAPS. They are the ones who take the witness stand and use their own voices to speak up for animals.
And it’s because of you that we can look after these victims of cruelty ... treat them gently and give them shelter, food, warmth and – above all – the opportunity to find a home in the true sense of the word.
A whole new life for them begins with your donation and support. Thank you for standing with us against the scourge of animal cruelty.
