Taking animal care to where it's needed most

On 9 October The Durban & Coast SPCA conducted a successful community outreach service in Ntuzuma, made possible by a special sponsorship and the collaboration of local community leaders.

A dedicated team of inspectors, field officers and support staff travelled to the heart of Ntuzuma and set up outside a local parish. With the help of community leaders, we got the word out to residents to bring their cats, dogs, puppies and kittens for health checks and sterilisation.

Throughout the day, a steady stream of people brought beloved pets for health assessments, and signed consent forms for them to be taken to our SPCA in Springfield Park to be spayed or neutered. At the SPCA, each animal was weighed, dewormed, vaccinated against rabies, treated for fleas and sterilised to prevent unwanted litters. They spent a comfortable night in clean kennels and cages, with fresh blankets, food, and water.

Next day all animals were safely returned, to the delight of their grateful owners.

“It was truly heartwarming to see how much the community cares about their animals,” said Tanya Fleischer, Marketing Manager of the Durban & Coast SPCA. “Thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, and the incredible support from Ntuzuma’s community leaders, we were able to make a real difference to people and animals who need it most.” Best of all, every dog and cat sterilised means fewer unwanted litters in the months and years ahead.
